First we take Zeebrugge.. then we take Vlissingen
As Leonard Cohen said when he sailed up the North Sea. Sunny day all looking good But No Wind. How I'll miss those waves. Perhaps summer is here at last. Watch this space !!! ############# 7kn on the beam. Tide in the right direction. Smooth sea. Sunshine. Motor sailing cone hoisted. Making good progress. All … Continue reading First we take Zeebrugge.. then we take Vlissingen
Oostende. Much the same!
Weather bound so today was the tram to Oostende. This coast seems like one long beach with one town merging into another and many people huddling together in flats You would certainly hope the residents on the ground floor are careful with their chip pan, especially as they're famous for double frying their chips here. … Continue reading Oostende. Much the same!
I should never have shot that albatross
Yesterday. Shore day. Sunny, lightish winds, very pleasant. Today. Sailing day. Awoken by howling wind in the rigging and rain on the cabin roof!! So though the wind is now SW which is much better and means the end of this lee shore and with limited fetch, much smaller waves, it's still cold, wet, too … Continue reading I should never have shot that albatross
Topiary topiary everywhere, and not a drop….
No, that's the wrong story, but there is an awful lot of it about! Topiary, that is! It's all very much like a model village with clean, ordered, well tended houses and gardens - huge open spaces (not the place for an agoraphobics convention) and lots of cyclists of course. Kind of like the Stepford … Continue reading Topiary topiary everywhere, and not a drop….
Call me Ishmael
A day off to wander round Nieuwpoort. Sunny today as it was on the last rest day, in Dover. Just grey and horrible when we're sailing it seems. But back tomorrow on the grim and seemingly relentless quest to get to Holland. Feels like the voyage of the Pequod . I'll consider renaming the boat … Continue reading Call me Ishmael
Lift Out
We've ended up at the Belgian Air Force Yacht Club. Apart from renaming Lobster 3... But look at these lift and wash prices! I just paid £150+ at premier in eastbourne. Also I refuelled in dunkerque on one of those auto 'put your credit card in' machines this morning. €18 worth of fuel but then … Continue reading Lift Out
Nieuwpoort
Home of topiary by the looks of the entrance. There was a bit of indecision this morning over the 20kn predicted winds - but are we men or mice? Men when we set off (not including Lynn) but mice when it turned out to be really quite rough and the wind was 27kn. On the … Continue reading Nieuwpoort
Dunkerque. Well it’s better than Calais
A day in dunkerque. Lovely. Saw the little ships beaches. All walkways and nice restaurants now so big improvement on 1940. Last time I was here was with MVS escorting the Little Ships commemorative crossing but we didn't visit the actual beach. There is a nice large park of sculptures. Probably spending up the UK's … Continue reading Dunkerque. Well it’s better than Calais
Dunkerque !
Yesterday was more of the same. Grey cold windy with a late arrival at dunkerque and of course no shops open on Sunday so I'm having to develop a liking for black coffee. However on waiting to leave Calais we gave listening to ch17 a go. I suspect that Monsieur le Port Control recognised the … Continue reading Dunkerque !
