Fear and Loathing

Sunny day in Portsmouth yesterday so I ventured into Gunwharfe Quays.

What a disturbing shock of dystopian fiction made flesh!

A sea of masks, topped by frightened eyes, scuttling to avoid getting too close!
Big Brother style Tannoy announcements warning to keep apart from others!
One way systems herding people around the shops…. and on every door a hand sanitising enforcer!

Do science fiction writers have special insight or do we, consciously or not, bring their gloomy predictions into reality?

If only 1984 et al had been cheery tales of a golden age of freedom, peace and prosperity, perhaps we could have brought that into being instead!

Here’s an extract from Frankie Boyle’s book: Dad doesn’t go to work each day, he simply plugs a cable into his head and enters a virtual work world. This leaves him more time for his hobbies of tennis and golf, which he plays by plugging cables into his back and neck.

I blame the writers!

Fortunately all these things can be forgotten whilst sailing – the sea remains the same regardless 🙂

So yesterday I arrived at friendly Southsea Marina – or at least it seemed friendly until we received the almost surreal bill from the on site Bombay Bay Indian Restaurant!
By rights I should be a major partner in the business after paying that!

Consequently slightly out-of-date pasta tonight….

  1. Strange how seemingly fiction can and seems more often than not to transform into reality. Bizarre 😏
